Indexed color issues:

hotoshop 5 changed the way colors are indexed. White does not remain completely white and black does not remain completely black after indexing. For some reason this doesn't always occur with all images. This is yet another issue with Photoshop 5 that was not an issue in previous releases. In the top image at right the 2 squares in the lower left are black (RGB 0,0,0) and white (RGB 255, 255, 255) as measured by the info palette. When the image is converted to indexed color, as in the preparation for .gif, black becomes 1, 1, 1 and white becomes 255, 247, 230 as in the second image. When this issue was raised in the comp.graphics.apps.photoshop newsgroup, Adobe employee Chris Cox provided the following work around:

1. Convert the image from RGB to Indexed, and specify the Adaptive palette, and specify exactly 254 colors.

2. Still in the indexed color dialog, switch to Custom palette

3. Change last two entries to pure black and white

4. Hit OK

5. Hit OK

6. Done

When these procedures are followed the image at bottom is the result. The difference is quite noticeable, even to my old eyes.
